Healthcare Waste Guidance

“Safe Management of Healthcare Waste”

The “Safe Management of Healthcare Waste”, otherwise known as Health Technical Memorandum 07-01, was released at the end of 2006. This document, which was developed in conjunction with the Environment Agency, DoH and the waste industry, was designed to offer comprehensive guidance to any organisation involved in the production, transportation and disposal of healthcare waste. It offers practical advice, Guidance and a colour-coding regime to help ensure a unified approach to waste management across the UK.

Key changes included:

- The removal of the old “Clinical waste Group A-E” definitions
- Guidance regarding the definition and classification of infectious waste
- A revised colour-coded best practice waste segregation and packaging system
- Guidance on the use of European Waste Catalogue (EWC) codes

How can we help?

Healthcare waste can be highly hazardous, infectious and offensive.  Disposing of these wastes, in accordance with current legislation can be complex, but needn't be confusing.  PHS Wastemanagement has developed guides for healthcare professionals, to help them segregate their waste.  This not only helps them adhere to the regulations, but can also provide cost savings on disposal.  Download the guides here:
